Roots and Wings Early Learning Centre
History about Roots & Wings Early Learning Centre a division of Sunny Mountain Daycare Centre.
In 2011, Sunny Mountain Day care Centre was proud to have the opportunity to work with River East/Transcona school division and Sherwood School to operate Roots & Wings Early Learning Centre. We were using two classrooms, the gym and the school’s staff / kitchen room for preparing snacks. During this time, we were licensed for 31 children: 16 preschoolers (2-6 yr.) and 15 school age children (6-12 yr.)
In 2012, we temporarily moved to and rented from Morse place community Centre on Munroe Ave while our Centre was under renovations. In May 2014, after completing an extensive renovation our new facility has become an amazing place to specifically foster education and exploration in children. We now have our own entrance, two classrooms, two washrooms, an office and a kitchen area. We opened a kindergarten program and we are now licensed for 41 children: 16 preschoolers, 10 kindergartens and 15 school age children.
With our Centre being located at 509 Grey St. connected to Sherwood School this allows a close encounter for your child to get a head start at becoming familiarized within Sherwood’s elementary school setting. Preschool (2-5 yr.) begin with our all-day group daycare and then easily transition into our kindergarten school program by continuing before and after school in and out of daycare.
Programming
Roots & Wings ELC Main Focus is on Reggio Emilia philosophy which is an innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education. This is an approach to teaching, learning and advocacy for children. This is a most basic form and is a way of observing what children know, are curious about and what challenges them. Teachers are listening, observing and documenting based on these observations and plan to reflect on developmentally appropriate ways to help children expand their academic and social potentials.
In our Centre the classroom spaces are offered daily opportunities to encounter many types of materials, many expressive languages, working actively with hands, minds and emotions, in a context that values the expressiveness and creativity of each child in the group.
One Example: In the morning before parents drop off their children, teachers set up an environment which is filled with materials such as structures blocks, paint, recycling and writing implements. Children use these materials to represent concepts that they are learning in a hands-on way. While exploring how to put parts together. While the children were building a robot or wood structure they were given the opportunity to reinforce math skills, problem solving and emergent literacy- all in relationship to their hands-on project.
